It also doesn’t hurt that it gives fantastic results. Not only does it result in a shapelier and more natural-looking derriere, but it also contributes to an hourglass figure because of its liposuction component.
And so, if you’re considering getting a BBL, here are five things you should know first about this much-coveted surgery.
Prepare for your BBL.
The pre-operative process is essential for a successful BBL. This is when your surgeon will determine the best way to achieve your desired results.
There are a few things that you need to do to prepare for your surgery, including the following:
-
- Get a consultation with your surgeon. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your body type. They’ll talk to you about your desired results. Along with that, they can also answer any questions about the procedure.
- Stop smoking. If you smoke, stopping at least two weeks before your surgery is vital. You should also abstain from alcohol intake.
- Make arrangements for post-op recovery. You won’t be able to work or do strenuous activities immediately after your surgery, so prepare for that. Have someone to take care of you, especially if you have small children.
- Watch your diet and medications. Avoid foods, drinks, drugs, and herbal supplements that can increase your risk of bleeding. These include aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood thinners.
Know what to expect after surgery.
Here are some things you can expect in the days and weeks following your BBL procedure.
- Soreness and discomfort. You’ll be sore after surgery, but don’t worry because it’s normal. Your body is healing and adjusting, so give yourself time to recover. Take pain medications as needed.
- Bruising and swelling. You may have bruises around the incision sites and swelling in the treatment area. These should improve over time.
- Crusting and flaking. The treated area may crust over or flake off as it heals. Make sure to keep the site clean and dry to prevent infection.
- Itching. As the treated area heals, you may experience some itching. Remember not to scratch too much, as it could damage your skin. But if the itching is bothering you, talk to your doctor about ways to relieve it.
- Changes in skin color. The treated area may temporarily change color, becoming darker or lighter. Even so, the skin will eventually return to its normal color over time.
- Sensitivity to touch. The treated area may be sensitive to touch for a while, so be gentle with it. You may want to avoid wearing tight clothing to help prevent any discomfort.
Ask your doctor for your recovery timeframe.
Recovering from BBL surgery can take several weeks. More than that, you’ll need to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the buttocks.
During recovery, expect the following:
- You must focus on recovery for the first week after your surgery. Avoid strenuous activity, including workouts or sex.
- You’ll probably be sore and swollen for at least a few weeks. Expect to wear compression garments for at least six weeks to help with the swelling.
- It will likely be three to four months before you see your final results. So don’t freak out if your buttocks don’t look any different right away.
- Sleeping on your stomach or side is recommended for the first few weeks of recovery. Make sure you don’t sleep on your back because it’ll put pressure on your buttocks.
- Avoid sitting or lying directly on your butt for at least two weeks after surgery. It means no sitting in chairs, couches, or cars. Instead, prop yourself up on pillows or use a special BBL pillow.
- You’ll probably have some numbness in your butt and thighs after surgery. Even so, there’s no need to worry since it’s normal and should improve over time.
- You’ll need to take care of your incisions. Keep them clean and dry, and don’t forget to shower once Dr. Masri gives you the go-ahead.
- You should avoid long road trips or flights for at least four weeks after surgery to prevent blood clots. And if you’re planning a vacation, make sure it’s close to home.
Other than that, Dr. Nidal Masri wants his patients to be ambulatory. Doing so will enhance blood circulation and prevent dangerous blood clots and emboli.
Be aware of the risks and complications.
As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks associated with BBL, like:
- Infection. Infection is always a risk for any surgery, so keep your incision sites clean. Contact your surgeon for any signs of infection, like fever, redness, and pain.
- Seroma. A seroma is a collection of fluid that can form around the injection site. It’s usually not serious and will resolve on its own, but in some cases may need drainage by a doctor.
- Fat necrosis. Fat necrosis is when the injected fat dies and forms hard lumps under the skin.
- Asymmetry. As with any cosmetic procedure, perfect symmetry is not always possible to achieve. In some cases, one side may be slightly larger or smaller than the other.
- Skin sensitivity. The injected fat can cause the skin to become sensitive and irritated. Usually, it goes away on its own within a few weeks. But some cases may require medication or ointment to help relieve the symptoms.
