Give Your Chubby Cheeks Some Love
Nick Masri MD

As a plastic surgeon, I get tons of requests (some really crazy ones) from my patients.
“Can you make me look like Kim Kardashian?”
“I want my breasts to be bigger than my twin’s. But don’t tell her I said that.”
“Can you transfer my friend’s butt fat to my own butt?”
But by far the most common request would have to be…
“Please make my face look younger.”
Everyone wants to go back to how they looked like ten years ago or just preserve their current look.
And for decades, the prevailing theory about aging is that our facial tissues simply yield to the effects of gravity over time. That’s why we do surgical facelifts to lift sagging facial skin and make our patients look decades younger.
But this interesting study I read the other day points to a different reason why facial aging happens. In fact, it might even change the way that we approach anti-aging cosmetic surgeries.
According to a recent paper published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the loss of fat on the face is the main culprit behind obvious signs of aging…
Like those deep nasolabial folds from your nose to your mouth…
Your hollow and deflated cheeks and areas around the eyes…
And even the heaviness of your jowls.
But fat loss doesn’t only involve the superficial fat found just beneath your skin. There’s actually more fat loss in deeper areas, which removes support from the overlying fat and causes all the signs of facial aging.
Of course, gravity still plays a factor, but volume loss due to fat reduction has a bigger role than we previously thought.
So, the next time you complain about your chubby cheeks, think about how you’ll miss your facial fat as it slowly diminishes while you age.
And as facial rejuvenation methods continue to evolve, it’s exciting to think that someday, we might actually get to reposition and re-distribute facial fat to recreate a naturally youthful face.
But while waiting for that, right now you have a whole line of anti-aging cosmetic procedures to choose from.
I’ll go into detail as you read the rest of this newsletter.
To a younger-looking you,
