How’s Plastic Surgery Post-Pandemic? Here are the Numbers

After the pandemic comes an uncertain economy, so it’s easy to dismiss plastic surgery and focus on more “essential” stuff.

But according to the latest numbers from the Inaugural ASPS Insights and Trends Report: Cosmetic Surgery 2022, plastic surgery is actually on the rise despite the economic climate*.

Just a few short months ago, the idea of elective surgery may have seemed like a thing of the past. But as COVID-19 cases declined, people started considering surgical procedures again, with the main motivation to invest in themselves and their well-being.

Let’s take a closer look at the data from this latest national survey.

Demand Continues to Soar Post-Pandemic

With vaccines rollout underway and case numbers decreasing, life is returning to normal. And for many people, that means it’s time to start getting back into pre-pandemic shape.

One of the industries that have seen a surge in demand is the plastic surgery industry. The ASPS survey shows more than 75% increased demand compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Around 23% of aesthetic-focused practices also said their business had doubled, with 6% claiming their business has tripled since the pandemic began.

But the rise in demand for plastic surgery isn’t only for just one or two procedures. Here are the top five surgical procedures patients are seeking this 2022:

Rank Surgical Procedure Function Age group that’s most likely to get plastic surgery
1 Liposuction Help sculpt the body by removing undesirable fat deposits. Many patients opt for liposuction to improve their body contours and appearance. 31 to 45
2 Facelift Help rejuvenates the appearance of the face by reducing wrinkles and sagging skin. This procedure is for patients who want to restore a more youthful appearance to their faces. 45+
3 Breast Augmentation Help increase the size and shape of the breasts. Many sought this procedure to improve their appearance and boost their self-confidence. 31 to 45

5 Breast Lift Help raise and reshape the breasts. This procedure is perfect for improving breasts’ appearance after weight loss or pregnancy. 31 to 45

Also, below are the top five minimally invasive procedures this 2022.

3 Non Invasive Fat Reduction Uses energy to break down fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. Results show after two to four treatment sessions. Or sometimes, it can last for up to two years with maintenance treatments. 31 to 45
4 Non-Surgical Skin Tightening Uses energy to heat the skin and stimulate collagen production for smoother skin. Results can last for several months to a year or more with maintenance treatments.
5 Skin Care & Treatments Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures (MICS) include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and light therapy. Also, it improves the appearance of your skin by reducing sun damage, wrinkles, and fine lines. 31 to 45

Most patients also seek a combination procedure for shorter recovery times and lower costs.

Plastic Surgery as the Newest Way to Treat Yourself

Plastic surgery has always been done to boost one’s self-esteem, but it seems to have been reiterated during the pandemic.

According to patients, their motivation for getting plastic surgery includes:

Need for Normalcy

After years of wearing masks and avoiding social interaction, many longed for the pre-pandemic days. For some people, that means getting their hair cut or colored after months of letting it grow or go gray.

For others, it might mean getting a long-awaited botox treatment. Or perhaps undergoing rhinoplasty to enhance their appearance.

Whatever the reason, patients desire to feel like themselves again after such a challenging year.

The Desire for Self-Improvement

With all the extra time we have at home, many of us are looking for ways to improve ourselves.

For some people, that means taking up a new hobby or learning a new skill. For others, it may mean finally scheduling that long-awaited appointment with a plastic surgeon.

The Toll on Mental Health

It’s no secret that the pandemic has been tough on everyone’s mental health. Anxiety and depression rates were through the roof. And people are struggling to cope with the constant stress and uncertainty.

For some, cosmetic surgery can be a way to boost their confidence and self-esteem. Besides, feeling good about yourself can also make a big difference on the inside.

“Zoom Boom” Is Real

With so many people working from home, many continuously see themselves on video calls. This increased exposure led to the “Zoom Boom.”

People have become more aware of the imperfections in their appearance, leading to enhancements.

“Maskne” Is a Thing

Thanks to COVID-19, face masks have become essential to our everyday lives. But as anyone who has dealt with “maskne” can attest, wearing a mask can harm your skin.

Breakouts, dryness, and wrinkles are just some problems that can crop up when your face is constantly covered. And while there’s no surefire way to prevent maskne entirely, cosmetic treatments help cut the effects.

More Budget Despite Economic Woes

Patients spend more on cosmetic procedures than before the pandemic because of their steady interest.

And a few factors have contributed to the increase in the demand for cosmetic surgery, like:

  • People spend more time at home, looking in the mirror.
  • People are appearing on video calls for work and personal interactions, which has increased focus on appearance.
  • Many people have been able to save money during the pandemic and are now choosing to spend that money on cosmetic procedures.

With these numbers, it’s certain that plastic surgery is here to stay. And with interest steadily rising, it’s safe to say the whole industry will also continue to advance.
